Minneapolis Boat Show

January 22, 2010
I have been at the ShoreMaster booths at the Minneapolis Boat Show and things are looking pretty good. We had to change plans last minute because of some DNR issues over the hardcover top that we wanted to release. We did put in the new boat lift canopy that travels up and down, which is pretty cool. The dealers have had times of being very busy and times of being slow. The coming weekend will tell the tale. So what does a dealer do when it is not busy?? Sure it would feel good to go sit down and have a cup of coffee or head back to the room and take a nap. But how about taking advantage of the time and go visit the competition? How are they priced? What products do they have to offer? Ask for a brochure. How are they doing at the show? Open up a dialogue, eliminate the rumours that you heard about them, whatever. Try a little networking and visit with a couple of boat retailers make some contacts. If that is not your cup of tea, how about making sure you have all items ready for when it gets busy. Brochures out? Is the booth clean and orderly? Try moving a few products around to make flow easier now that you have seen how people enter and leave your booth. Here is another idea. How about tweeting a great experience you had with a customer or tweet a photo of you and the customer shaking hands after closing a deal. That will irratate the competitors that you just started building a relationship with! Oh yea, that is the same competitor that is back at the hotel taking a nap...........

The "National Honor Society" of life

January 12, 2010
I was at the local National Honor Society induction ceremony last evening for kids in our local High School. I got to be thinking about what it stands for and how it could relate to my life and how I do business. The NHS premise is founded on four basic elements, scholorship, service, leadership and character. These basic elements do not change when you leave high school and really should be considered in every day life. Scholarship is really about learning and that each day is a learning opp...

Walleye Fishing

January 4, 2010

I had a great evening of catching walleyes. Nothing better than catching through the ice. Check the video out on the ShoreMaster outdoors link on my website. www.garyjohnsonsales.com Mike Schultz and I kept our limit of slot size walleyes. We had to throw many large waleyes back because they exceeded that 20" size. Even if it was 10 below it was hot in the portable house and the fish were lit up.

MN DNR Rules Update

December 21, 2009
I just took sometime and read over the S.O.N.A.R. and the new rules "draft copy" proposed by the DNR of MN regarding waterfront structures. I have been told that these rules are on the govenors desk for his signature. Once it is signed, the DNR will be hosting public information meetings and the process will proceed. These rules will have an impact on how waterfront equipment (boat lifts and docks) is placed and used in the state of MN. Please feel free to let me know if you are interested in...
